Durham Green Retirement Village, Menangle - Design and Construction of Aged Care dwellings and Central Aged Care Facility

Value: $38 million.

Since the commencement of the Durham Green Retirement Village project, PBG has worked closely with all consultants for the project in developing and designing the self-care villas, aged care facilities and community buildings. Prior to the construction of this development, the site had electricity and water capacity for one dwelling only. When this development is completed the site will consist of 168 dwellings and a 46 bed aged care facility for both low and high care to the highest standards. The typical dwellings on this site are constructed of waffle pod floor slabs, brick veneer external walls, partial render and face brick facades, metal deck roofing with internal designs complying with SEPP (Seniors Living) 2004. The aged care building is a three level low and high care facility with community amenities including an arcade, restaurant, bar, library, pool, communal hall and courtyards.

Our work to date has been staged as follows:

  • Stage 1A and 1B: Construction of 20 self-care dwellings, civil works, road works and associated township infrastructure - $9.8 million
  • Stage 1C and 1D: Construction of 22 self-care dwellings, civil works, road works and associated township infrastructure - $5.8 million
  • Stage 1E and 1F: Construction of 26 self-care dwellings, civil works, road works and associated township infrastructure and the construction of the Aged Care Facility - $19.7 million
  • Stage 1G: Construction of 9 self-care dwellings - $2.6 million.

The University of Sydney – Design and Construction of Student Accommodation for Camden Campus

The University of Sydney appointed PBG as the head contractor to undertake the design and construction of student accommodation at their Camden Campus. PBG led a significant buildability review of the approved development application design. PBG retained the approved floor layouts and provided alternative designs to floor levels, flooring systems, wall cladding systems and wall and roof framing systems to produce significant cost savings to the client (20% of construction budget), which enabled the project to proceed.

PBG's design management included engagement, co-ordination and liaison with all consultants to ensure the design was completed on programme. The project delivered 14 duplex houses for student accommodation with five bedrooms each, giving a total of 70 beds. The works included augmentation of existing infrastructure, new build construction, civil works, car parking, pedestrian paths and landscaping in an active student accommodation area of the campus.

The University of Sydney – Design and Construction of a commercial kitchen at the Camden Campus

Patterson Building Group Pty Limited is currently appointed by The University of Sydney as head contractor to undertake the design and construction of student accommodation at their Camden Campus.  Part of this work involved the design and construction of a semi commercial kitchen for student use at nearby colleges.  



PBG’s brief was to consult with the Operations Manager and determine the scope, undertake the design, obtain sign off on the design and construct the works within 6 weeks from the direction received by USYD.  This was achieved within time and the budget set by the USYD.  The works involved full strip out of existing commercial kitchen, new hydraulic services and grease trap, modify and provide new electrical circuits, install new ceiling lights and fans, new mechanical services and exhaust hood, new wall and floor finishes, new and modified stainless steel joinery, student lockers, painting, test & commissioning.   This project was an excellent outcome to all stakeholders.

The University of New England – Construction of a New Cattle-Holding Facility

PBG was appointed as head contractor to undertake the construction of a new cattle-holding facility. Work on the project involved the demolition of existing structures and redundant communication tower, and the construction of a 1043m2 farm type building with cattle pens and cattle rail system for the housing of cattle for environmental impact studies. This includes testing facilities for methane produced by cattle to determine its impact on the environment. An extensive foundation system was constructed for this project as the site is positioned in high reactive clay. The success of the experiments undertaken in this building is dependent on the slab structure retaining its design and integrity.

Sargents Centre, Blacktown - Construction of New Community Centre

PBG was appointed as head contractor by Blacktown City Council to undertake the construction of a new community centre. The new centre provides a range of facilities for people with disabilities including offices for a number of small independents that also provide disability services to the community. Our works involved demolition, excavation and piering, structure, building services (mechanical, electrical, communications, fire, hydraulic, kitchen), facades and roofing, internal finishes, paving, landscaping and ancillary siteworks.

NSW Department of Finance and Services - Construction of Group Housing, Argenton

PBG was appointed as Head Contractor by the NSW Department of Finance and Services to undertake the construction of a DADHC Group Housing Facility at Argenton.  Our work involves the construction of a five bedroom group home and subsequent fit out to accommodate disadvantaged and disabled people.

Ozanam Industries, West Ryde – Refurbishment of St Vincent De Paul Premises

PBG was appointed by Altus Page Kirkland on behalf of St Vincent de Paul to undertake the refurbishment of Ozanam Industries, 81-87 Ryedale Road, West Ryde. The works included the refurbishment of the existing warehouse into two separate sections (the warehouse and packing area), and a new entry off Ryedale Lane with a lobby into the packing area together with new offices. The addition of new toilets to the western end of the warehouse involved demolishing the existing toilets and underpinning the existing footings. Works also included the addition of a new lift to connect the two levels, the refurbishment and extension of the upper level to provide a new meals room, additional toilets and conference room and the replacement of the existing asbestos-contaminated roof over the warehouse to suit the operational requirements of the warehouse.

Coogee Surf Club – Alterations and additions

PBG was appointed by Randwick City Council to undertake the alternations and additions to the western side of the Coogee Surf Club building. Our work included the construction of stairs, walls, footpath, roofing, upgrading the building entrance and associated works. Our work was undertaken whilst the club was operating.

NSW Department of Finance and Services - Construction of three New Trade Training Centres

PBG was appointed by the NSW Department of Finance and Services to undertake the construction of the new Trade Training Centres for schools at Coonabarabran, Baradine and Binnaway in Western NSW. 
Coonabarabran consists of internal demolition and construction of an extension to the existing metal workshop to create a larger metal workshop, hairdressing teaching spaces and associated storage rooms.  
Baradine consists of the complete strip out of existing industrial art workshop and food technology workshop and refurbishment of new facilities for both to much improved standards, including upgrading of incoming electrical supply.
Binnaway consists of the partial strip out of industrial art and food technology workshops, construction of an extension to the existing industrial art workshop and refurbishment of both workshops to much improved standards, including upgrading incoming electrical supply.

NSW Fire Brigades - refurbishment and alterations to Ingleburn Training Centre

PBG was appointed as the head contractor by the NSW Fire Brigades for the alterations and additions to Ingleburn Training Centre.  The works involved an office refurbishment including mechanical services and electrical services, upgrades of lunch room halls and upgrade of ablutions and a new disabled toilet.  The construction programme was initially ten weeks however PBG were able to undertake the works within an eight week period.

The Univeristy of Sydney - Design and Construction of Student Accommodation at the Kingswood Campus

PBG was appointed by The University of Sydney as head contractor to undertake the design and construction of student accommodation at their Kingswood Campus.  Comprising 44 rooms, our involvement in the project included improving student security to achieve BCA compliance; the strip out and refurbishment of individual units including mechanical, hydraulic services and in the installation of new kitchens, bathrooms, fixtures and fittings.  PBG undertook this in an occupied environment , providing buildability input for the proposed design, ensuring services, structure, reflected ceiling plans, risers and ducts are co-ordinated and liaised with all consultants as necessary to ensure the refurbishment was completed on programme to meet the needs of the students.
